Georg Friedrich Haas wurde 1953 in Graz geboren. Von 1972 bis 1979 studierte er an der Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Graz Komposition bei Gösta Neuwirth, Klavier bei Doris Wolf und Musikpädagogik. 1978 begann er, an der Grazer Musikhochschule zu unterrichten. Zwischen 1981 und 1983 führte ihn ein Postgraduiertenstudium bei Friedrich Cerha an die Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst nach Wien. Von 1980 bis 1990 besuchte Haas die Internationalen Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in Darmstadt. Seit 1989 lehrt er als Professor für Kontrapunkt, Komposition und Analyse an der Grazer Musikhochschule. Haas, der Texte zu Luigi Nono, Ivan Wyschnegradsky, Alois Hába und Pierre Boulez publizierte, erhielt Preise und Stipendien, unter anderem durch die Salzburger Festspiele, durch das österreichische Bundesministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kultur und die Stadt Wien.

Georg Friedrich Haas was born in Graz in 1953. From 1972 until 1979 he studied musical composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz under Gösta Neuwirth, piano under Doris Wolf and music education. In 1978 he began to teach at the music university in Graz. Between 1981 and 1983, a post-graduate course under Friedrich Cerha took him to the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. From 1980 until 1990 Haas attended the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music. Since 1989 he has held the professorship for counterpoint, composition and analysis at the music university in Graz. Haas, who has published texts on Luigi Nono, Ivan Wyschnegradsky, Alois Hába and Pierre Boulez, has been awarded numerous prizes and scholarships, including awards from the Salzburg Festival, the Austrian Ministry of Education, Research and Culture, and the City of Vienna.
