Benoît B. Mandelbrot (geb. am 20. 11. 1924), querdenkender Mathematiker und Begründer der fraktalen Geometrie, starb am 14. 10. 2010. Mandelbrot prägte den Begriff »fraktal« für eine neue Klasse mathematischer Formen, deren unebene Konturen die Irregularitäten der Natur imitieren konnten. Er verteidigte mathematische Objekte, die, wie er sagte, von anderen als »monströs« und »pathologisch« abgetan wurden. Er argumentierte, dass man sich mittels fraktaler Geometrie ehemals als unmessbar erachteten, komplexen Umrissen von Wolken und Küstenlinien annähern könne. Mandelbrots Forschung beeinflusste Geologie, Medizin und Kosmologie. Er nutzte Fraktale, um etwa zu erklären, wie sich Galaxien anhäufen oder sich Säugetiergehirne während des Wachstums falten. Benoît B. Mandelbrot (das selbst gewählte Mittelinitial steht dabei für keinen zweiten Vornamen) war Sohn einer jüdischen Familie in Warschau, die 1936 vor den Nazis nach Südfrankreich flüchtete, wo er Pferde pflegte und Werkzeug reparierte. Mandelbrot verglich seinen eigenen Werdegang mit den unebenen Umrissen von Wolken und Küsten, die ihn in den 1950er Jahren zum Studium der Fraktale geführt hatten.
Don Van Vliet (geb. am 15. 1. 1941), als Captain Beefheart zur Rocklegende geworden, starb am 17. 12. 2010. Er wurde in den 1960ern mit seinem einzigartigen Stil von experimentellem Rock’n’Roll bekannt. Nach zwei Jahrzehnten im Rampenlicht als Komponist und Performer zog er sich zurück, um sich der Malerei und dem Zeichnen zu widmen.
Van Vliet wuchs in Kalifornien auf und brach die Schule ab, um mit Frank Zappa Film- und Musikprojekte zu machen. 1964 gründete er Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band und veröffentlichte 1969 das Doppelalbum Trout Mask Replica. Das Album setzte neue Maßstäbe für die Popmusik, indem es Avantgarde Jazz mit R&B, Poesie und Garage-Rock auf eine surreale Art kombinierte.

When composing songs, I try to hear the fully formed piece in my inner ear before I commit to notating it. Songs are meant to be sung! The notation is more of an act of transcription. Formal structures are not foremost in this process, though certain extended techniques are an integral part of how I hear, and are often present.
Benoît Mandelbrot and Captain Beefheart were key figures and great inspirations for my own art. I tried to draw on aspects of their work without illustrating or appropriating it, but rather by translating elements of it to a small portion of the audio spectrum.

Benoît B. Mandelbrot (born November 20 1924), a maverick mathematician who developed the field of fractal geometry, died on October 14 2010. Mandelbrot coined the term ›fractal‹ to refer to a new class of mathematical shapes whose uneven contours could mimic the irregularities found in nature.
He defended these mathematical objects that he said others had dismissed as ›monstrous‹ and›pathological‹. Using fractal geometry, he argued, the complex outlines of clouds and coastlines, once considered unmeasurable, could now be approached. Mandelbrot contributed to the fields of geology, medicine and cosmology, using fractals to explain how galaxies cluster and how mammalian brains fold as they grow, among other phenomena. Benoît B. Mandelbrot (the middle initial which he added himself does not stand for a middle name) was born to a Jewish family in Warsaw. In 1936 his family fled the Nazis to the south of France, where he tended horses and fixed tools. Mandelbrot compared his own trajectory to the rough outlines of clouds and coastlines that drew him into the study of fractals in the 1950s.
Don Van Vliet (born January 15 1941), who became a rock legend as Captain Beefheart, died on December 17 2010. He rose to prominence in the 1960s with a unique style of experimental rock & roll. After two decades in the spotlight as composer and performer, Van Vliet retired to devote himself to painting and drawing.
He grew up in California and dropped out of high school to work with Frank Zappa on film and musical projects. In 1964 Van Vliet formed Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band and released the double album Trout Mask Replica in 1969. The album redrew the boundaries of popular music, combining avant garde jazz, R&B, poetry and garage rock in a surreal way. ›It is a masterpiece,‹ Rolling Stone wrote in 1970. ›It will probably be many years before American audiences catch up to things that happen on this totally amazing record.‹
