Escalier du Chant

Deutsch

Mika Vainio was born in 1963 in Helsinki. He appeared with various experimental groups in the Finnish art and techno scene before founding the internationally acclaimed e-music project Pan Sonic in 1993 with Ilpo Väisänen. Pan Sonic is known for its minimalistic, rhythmical music and extremely reduced structures. Its sound shows clear influences from industrial music of the ’80s, the American electronic band Suicide and music concrète. Vainio and Väisänen use virtually no digital equipment with synthesizers; their instruments are largely restricted to specially made, analog sound generators that interact on a modular basis. The duo has a strong affinity to the visual arts and, since the mid 1990s, has created several sound installations for exhibitions such as at the Hayward Gallery, London and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. Mika Vainio has released numerous albums with various bands as well as under his own name and his pseudonym Ø. The best known include »Metri« (1993), »Aaltopiiri« (2001) and »Black Telephone of Matter« (2009). He has worked together with Björk, Alan Vega from Suicides and Chicks on Speed, et al.
